5: Den Treek 6: Little and Large! 7: Trips from De Haan 8: Zuider Zee and Home

From Enschede we cycled north east to the NTKC Springendal site near the German border.  We experienced thunder storms whilst on the train and the odd shower riding to the site.  Upon arrival, first impressions were not good, as we were tried, as the site was a wooded site with small clearings.  This is the one we camped in.  One we were refreshed - the site grew on us.  We took just the one tent, our Hilleberg Stalon 2 GT.

In common with NTKC sites, Springendal had a nice camp fire circle.

We spent two nights at Springendal, so on Sunday we went on cross border ride to Germany.

The ANWB in addition to providing signposts for roads - distinctive blue and white, they have provided the Netherlands with a wonderful network of "paddestoel" or "mushrooms".  These and the road signs are numbered, and the maps that they produce also have the numbers on the maps.  So armed with a ANWB map there is no excuse for getting lost.  Here is a mushroom 22215.

Detail of mushroom 22215.  In all we had only done just over a mile to get to this point!

ET phone home!  It has been a standing joke between Ann  and I and previous trips away by Ceri-Siân and I, Ceri-Siân had shown no interest in talking to Mummy.  However this trip and since, when every time I tried to phone home, I haven't been able to get a word in edgeways!  This is Ceri-Siân phoning home from Nordhorn in Germany

On the road between Nordhorn and Veldhausen in Germany.  Not sure what it is.

An EU folly?  A bridge in the middle of nowhere.  Seen across the stream and minor road between Neuenhaus and Uelsen in Germany.   The direction of the bridge would suggest a failed Netherlands - Germany Link

A refreshing fountain in Uelsen in Germany.  The Sunday was extremely hot, so I filled my hat with water and put it on my head.  In this region of the Netherlands and Germany we came across many bronze statues.

We think this marks the border between the Netherlands and Germany.  We cycled into Germany on a cycle track which was firm on the outskirts of Nordhorn, on the return we traversed this sandy route.

The Sunday evening we rode into Ootmarsum, the nearest Dutch town to Springendal.  By the church there was this nice bronze.
