Ceri-Siân spent two week in the summer of 2006 staying with a family in Saint-Marcellin (town site)and she enjoyed her stay so much she wanted to go back.  Saint-Marcellin in the Isère Department (#38) of France, in the Isère valley about halfway between Valance and Grenoble. When you arrive in St-Marcellin, the first thing that you see is the roundabout at the exit of the A49.  As you arrive there is the above facing you on the roundabout.

The middle part of the roundabout was also nicely cultivated.

As you leave St-Marcellin you were greeted by the above message on the roundabout plus a nice view of the Vercors in the distance.

A key feature of St-Marcellin is the weekly market which is held on a Saturday.  The market dominates the town and compared with the one in Roman-sur-Isère (population 33K) it seemed a lot larger and a lot more vibrant, even though population wise St-Marcellin is just under 7000, the population of St-Macellin Canton is 20K.  When Ceri-Siân stayed in 2006, the apartment she stayed in was in the market square.  One of the presents we brought ourselves and some friends were braids of garlic, similar to those seen above.  We Ended up freezing a lot pureed with olive oil.  The girls have complained due to a lot of the food in the freezer gaining a garlic flavour.

In addition to the market stalls, the streets also have the street café atmosphere common in France.

A view from the town centre looking east to the Vercors.  The sort of view the locals don't consider as special!

A common road sign in the towns of the Isère.  A lot nicer then the standard signs we have in the UK!

The view from the low hill by where the family Ceri stayed with lives. Ceri and I thought what a fantastic view.  Ceri's friend thinks it just an ordinary view!

St-Marcellin is famous for its cheese.  According to one source it is on the 5 must have French cheeses.  The cheeses are a nice round compact size and are brought loose for about 0.75 to 1.00 each from the local markets.  Two are seen above which I brought from the French market that came to Loughborough in December.  I took a day of work in order to get to the cheese stall in good time to get some St-Marcellin cheese.  The stall only had 4 and I brought all 4.  In addition whilst in the Vercors Ceri introduced me to Saucisson, a dried/fermented sausage, which in France is mainly produced in the Rhône-Alpes region of France.  Whilst at the Loughborough French market we brought 4 varieties for Christmas and New Year festivities.  The above shows 4 different saucisson laid out (venison, walnut, pepper and wild boar) with two St Marcellin cheeses.
